Can you touch a prayer? Can you pull it close and feel its comfort? You can if it’s part of a prayer quilt! Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. The purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts. Ribbons are sewn to the quilt and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. Individual members of the congregation then finish these quilts by tying knots after each worship service. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for the person in need, who then receives the finished quilt. This is not just a gift of a quilt; it is a gift of love and prayer. It is an affirmation of our faith in God and our belief in God’s power to comfort, strengthen, and heal. The quilters and sewers of First United Methodist Church of Ponchatoula Prayers and Squares Prayer Quilt Ministry make quilts individually, and meet monthly to prepare quilt fabric for the seamstresses. Visitors and new sewers/quilters are encouraged to join us. (Check the church calendar.) Donations of 100% cotton quilt fabric, cotton batting, and sewing and quilting items are welcome as well as monetary gifts.
Anyone can request a quilt for another person who is in special need of prayer. We refer to the requester as the quilt’s “sponsor”. The sponsor needs to:
1. Complete a request form by getting one from the church office or use one of those provided at the bulletin board near the church office and at each entrance to the sanctuary. If you bring the form to the church, please drop it off at the office or in the offering plate on Sunday during Worship Service. Verbal requests are not accepted. If you have any questions, please contact the church office.
2. Ask the recipient to agree to accept the gift of prayer in the form of a quilt. A prayer quilt should not be a surprise gift.
3. Ask the quilt recipient for their specific prayer requests.
4. Deliver the quilt to the recipient.
“It’s not about the quilt, it’s about the PRAYERS.” There is no charge for the quilt.
